Is this just another one of those gimmicks, or could it really work? Well, in a Calora Baby poll over 75% women said it worked for their babies.

What is an amber teething necklace?

An amber teething necklace is about 32cm long, made of natural amber stones, usually with secure clips to prevent chocking, and small knots to hold each bead in place. These amber beads are not for chewing, and are usually worn during the night when your child is teething.

Why wear it?

The Eco Baby Company notes, “Amber is associated with sunlight and warmth. It is reputed to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, and accelerate the healing of wounds, making it the perfect soother for babies and children while teething.” It is all-natural and a less intrusive remedy for pain without side effects. It will calm baby without resorting to medication.

How does it work?

It works with the warmth of a baby’s skin. Where the teething necklace touches, the warmth of the skin releases a special oil (containing succinic acid) from the amber, which is again absorbed by the baby’s skin, and so into the bloodstream. “Succinic acid is used in some pharmaceutical applications, and is recognised as having many therapeutic properties,” according to the Cherub Tree South Africa.

As amber is not a stone, it is not only comfortable, but also light and warm to the touch.

What are the benefits for baby?

The use of amber beads was seen in the Far East and Europe and is believed to be a very old practice. Amber aids in reducing inflammation of the throat, ear and stomach, as well as respiratory disease and infection. It is believed to treat the side effects of teething, such as loss of appetite, ear and troubled tummy, colds and fever.

As a natural pain reliever, it could help soothe the pain associated with teething, as well as baby’s mood.  Furthermore, amber’s anti-inflammatory attributes is recognised by allopathic medicine. “The healing properties of amber include calmative, analgesic, antispasmodic, expectorant and febrifuge (anti-fever) functions.” (The Eco Baby Company).

The amber necklace “stimulates the thyroid gland to help reduce drooling and soothes red and inflamed cheeks.”(Baby Inc).

“It can aid in treating bacterial infections. It aids the body in the detoxification process. It supports tissue regeneration.” (Cherub Tree South Africa.)

Amber is also believed to have an effect on the metaphysical. It is believed that it absorbs the harmful energy omitted by electronic devices such as microwave ovens, cellphones, computers, etc. It works like this: when you rub amber, it changes ionization and attracts light objects with its electrical charge. After it has absorbed this energy, it allows the body to concentrate on reconstructing disturbed electrostatic fields.

When is it safe to start wearing the necklaces?

“The necklace may be worn from 8 weeks and up … If your child wears it at a young age, they will not even know it is there and they will not touch it or pull on it,” according to the Eco Baby Company.
