Nurturing Baby And You In The First Few Months

Mom and babyA new baby can be an exciting time, but can also be an overwhelming time for a new mother and we can sometimes forget how important it is to nurture ourselves during this time with all the focus on our new addition. You are vital to your baby’s happiness and health, and taking care of yourself will enable you to care for the newest member of the family.

Don’t forget to smell the roses

Taking some time to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine are a great way to help you reduce the stress of having a new baby as well as boost your vitamin D intake and your energy levels. Consider taking a short 15 minute walk in the sunshine to increase your vitamin D levels and lift your spirits. Exercise releases endorphins which are good for your emotional well being, especially as you adjust to having a new baby.

If you don’t have anyone to look after your new arrival when you want to go for a walk, don’t be afraid to take baby with you. A peaceful walk outdoors can be as energising and uplifting for baby as it can be for you. Just remember to keep your little one protected against the harsh sun and cold winds. This is also a great time for bonding with your baby with some quiet time to share.

Sleeping for beauty and strength

Although sleep is known to be rather elusive as a new parent, it’s crucial that you try to get some quality sleep. Sleep deprivation and sleep disturbances are associated with exhaustion and depression and many new mothers may experience difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, even when the baby is sleeping.

Sleep helps the body to recharge naturally and can affect you emotionally as well as your attention and focus. Consider asking a family member to help out and baby sit for a few hours to give you time to rest.

Meditation and yoga are great ways to get some additional relaxation and quiet time. They offer a chance to let go of the stresses of having a new baby while also providing a great chance to focus on your health with exercises that are ideal for new mothers.

Speak your mind

As a new parent, we can often feel overwhelmed with responsibility and many new moms are afraid to ask for help or to voice their concerns. As much for the baby as for you, do not be afraid to ask for a little time for yourself. It is important to take some time to recharge your batteries, even if it is something as simple as asking someone else to prepare dinner.

Many new mothers feel they should know what to do at all times and that they should be able to cope on their own. A new baby is overwhelming for everyone, and you should be able to voice any concerns you have or ask for help. A granny, your mom or even a friend with children, can offer helpful advice and some great anecdotes of their time as a new mom which will help you along the path.

Having a new baby is a wonderful time for you and your partner, but can also be an exhausting time. It is critical to nurture yourself as well as your new baby in the first few months to ensure you are both strong and healthy.

Try to take the time to give yourself some rest and relaxation to boost your strength and revive your energy levels, and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine when the opportunity presents itself to give both you and baby an enjoyable time together and some healthy sunshine. Don’t forget to ask for help when you need it. Nobody expects a new mother to be able to do everything themselves, and your loved ones will enjoy an opportunity to help you and to get to know your new addition.
