Massage – Not Just For Stressed Out Moms!

Baby massage

When we visit our masseurs we may receive a rigorous massage that could leave our muscles a little tender, or even sore. So it’s not surprising that people living in westernised countries could be afraid that our little babies’ bodies are simply too fragile to endure something like a massage.

But infant massage is something quite different to an adult massage. It -s been an ancient art in the caring of babies and young children for many years in places like China, Africa and India.

In such places it’s seen as a means of saturating the soul with courage, strengthening bone structure, enhancing the flexibility and precision of limb coordination and assisting in weight gain.

Practised in western society

But in western society this ancient art of healing and general well being is something that’s now being practised more and more often, although, perhaps, for slightly different reasons.

By gentle -massage strokes across your baby’s entire body using a natural oil you will be creating a strong bond between the two of you, nurturing him in a loving manner.

The emotional benefits

There are two main beneficial areas where infant massage enhances your little one’s well being. The first is on an emotional plane and encompasses a strong interaction between parent and child, a deeper bonding, an emotional relaxation for both of you, and this is immensely comforting to junior.

The physical benefits

The other area that makes infant massage so important and beneficial is the physical side. As well as an emotional relaxation for him, it’s also a very physically relaxing time of baby’s day. It assists in stimulating the body’s organs and digestive system, along with muscle tone and blood circulation, and is often seen to provide relief in colicky babies.

Because babies are born creatures of habit, you may find it beneficial to set aside time for his massage at the same time each day. You will find that as young as he is he will soon learn to look forward to this time with you.

-Alone’ time for you and baby

Ideally it’s important to keep that time to -alone’ time with just the two of you, or at least quiet, peaceful time – no TV blaring in the background, no other children tearing through the room! It’s all about relaxation. If Dad wants to be a part of the massage time then make sure there is minimal talking between you, and rather just talking to junior. And if you are a single mom with an older child you don’t want to leave alone, then that child can choose to either help you or play quietly in the same room. But it’s imperative that disruptions do not occur.

What oil should I use?

The oil you choose depends on you and if your baby has any allergies. If he has allergies, have a chat to your doctor about what oil would not be an irritant to him. Some moms choose baby creams or baby oils, others choose plant or vegetable oils. If your baby doesn’t respond well to one, try another.

Just as you enjoy dim lighting, candles, calming aromas and a warm environment in which to take time out and relax, so too will junior respond to the same.

This is time for you and him – to bond, to relax and to enhance the well being of both of you. Make this time really count. Rushing it almost serves no purpose at all. Both you and your baby deserve this!
