Man flu – is it all just an act?

A recent study shows that there is a correlation between a weaker immune response and testosterone, which could suggest that men, if fact, do suffer more when they have the flu than women.

Mark Davis, microbiology and immunology professor, said in the study by Stanford University School of Medicine and published in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, that -this is the first study to show an explicit correlation between testosterone levels, gene expression and immune responsiveness in humans.

After studying the reactions of men and women to the flu vaccination, higher blood levels of signalling proteins, that is passed to and fro by immune cells when the body is under attack, were found in women. The women’s response came out on top – their antibodies had a better response to the vaccination than that of men – leaving them with a stronger shield against the virus.

It is suggested that the very same hormone that attributes to men their physical strength, can be the cause of their immune system’s weakness.
