Pole Dancing Mommies

Pole Dancing Mommies

When you hear the words pole dancing, what comes to mind? Let us guess – you envisage stripper heels and fishnet stockings, right? Now – erase the exotic dancers from your thoughts and replace that with mommies on the pole.

Interestingly, more and more moms are turning to pole dancing to shed their unwanted baby fat. Not only is this an extremely sexy way to get back in shape, but the results are said to be almost immediate. That’s according to moms who have tried it out like Calora Baby Forum mom Michbi.

Replace stripper heals with takkies

-I Pole dance for fitness and weight loss and WOW the results are fabulous! When 1 first started, I lost 10kg in 4 months and then had to stop when I was about 3 months pregnant. I’m back into it and I’m loving it again. I’m losing weight and toning up nicely and feeling confident and sexy again, says Michbi.

If you are looking to lose weight quickly, get toned and achieve an awesome body in just 12 weeks, then you need to find your nearest pole dancing school and enrol in a couple of classes.

This hot trend in the world of fitness has taken South Africa by storm.

With six studios in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town, BodyMind Studios is the first and largest professional pole dancing studio in South Africa.

Natasha Williams, founder of BodyMind Studios, has taught hundreds of women how to be more confident in their bodies, improve core strength and posture and get fit at the same time. -We have worked very hard to take the stigma out of pole dancing so that women from all walks of life can enjoy the benefits that pole dancing brings,” says Williams.

-Pole dancing has now grown to such an extent that it has become a sport, prized for stamina, strength, endurance, flexibility and grace. No other single piece of fitness equipment can offer the same results, she adds.

The Benefits of pole dancing

There are several benefits that go hand-in-hand with being a pole dancing mom. These include:

  • Increased muscle tone and body sculpting
  • Works entire body, but focus is on core stomach, upper body, arms and shoulders
  • Increased flexibility
  • Builds stamina and strength
  • Improved circulation
  • Increased self-confidence and body awareness
  • Improved posture and grace
  • Rhythm and co-ordination
  • Sexiness

Will I have to strip?

All respectable pole dancing schools do not require students to strip, or wear stripper heels. The aim is to improve fitness and confidence, not to go nude. Instructors do not teach you how to strip, but instead, teach you how to dance sensually. These steps are clearly different from those found in exotic dancing.

Can I pole dance while pregnant?

Pregnant women are required to seek medical advice before starting a new exercise regiment or class. While most pole dancing instructors say it is safe to do so, double check with your doctor. Remember that you need to take it easy if exercising during pregnancy. Don’t over exert yourself and don’t continue if you feel dizzy or if your heart is beating too fast.

Are men allowed into the class?

Most pole dancing classes for women don’t allow men to come in and watch. Most women attending these classes want privacy so that they are comfortable enough to get on with the exercise moves. Classes offered for men and women also differ slightly, as women’s moves are more sensual then those instructed in the male classes.

Staying safe

Like all exercise, there is a possibility that you may get injured. Without proper training students of the pole can easily get hurt. This is a risky sport that requires dangling upside-down and the use of muscles that are usually not used on a day-to-day basis.  Since celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston and Kate Moss raved about pole dancing as a great workout, there have been several gyms that have popped up all over the world, including in South Africa.

To make sure you are in safe hands, compare gyms and instructors. Choose an instructor with a relevant qualification that allows him or her to teach pole dancing and several years of practical experience. After all, injuries can led to paralyses like was the case with the 32-year-old UK mother of two who fell on her head – breaking her neck and severely damaging her spine in 2010.
