The miracle of pregnancy is one of the most exciting experiences for any woman. During the forty weeks of pregnancy, the expectant mother should choose foods carefully and follow a balanced and healthy eating plan.
Eating the right foods, which are rich in essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients, will provide great benefits for the growing baby.
Fresh is best
Fresh vegetables and fruits are rich sources of vitamins and because these foods are low in fats, they can be chosen as a snack any time of the day. Although many pregnant ladies would happily reach for that decadent slice of chocolate cake, don’t; foods high in sugar should be kept to a minimum. Fruits are light foods which mean they will not cause bloating and being rich in fibre the ripe apples, flavourful strawberries and tasty nectarines will prevent constipation (a common complaint during pregnancy).
Salads are easy choices for expectant moms who are working during their pregnancy. Salads are low- fat, easy meals and opting to eat healthy during pregnancy will also mean that there are fewer kilograms to shed after the baby’s birth.
Other healthy foods such as nuts, fish (tuna and salmon), cheese and yoghurt are highly recommended to the expectant mom looking for quick and healthy meal choices. A good rule of thumb is to stay away from foods which have a high fat content and foods which are processed (such as lunch meats). Remember to drink a lot of water during pregnancy (and during nursing) and stay away from drinks which are loaded with sugar.
The forbidden treat
Even though the rich chocolate cake has made it onto the -no-no’ list – enjoying a sugary treat every now and then is not a bad thing. As with anything in life, moderation is the trick, so be sure to limit the sugary foods.
