What causes pregnancy cravings?

There are several theories explaining what causes cravings. But, for the most part, it is agreed upon that the cravings stem from an unmet nutritional need. Thus, if you are craving salt, you must not be getting enough of it. However, this does not mean that every craving should be indulged, or that there might not be another explanation for your sudden insatiable craving for tuna and pickles. In some cases, pregnancy cravings can be dangerous.

Women have been known to begin craving all kinds of strange foods and even non-food items like chalk or dirt. Although pregnancy PICA is very rare, it can be dangerous if you do not know what is happening.

Staying healthy through pregnancy cravings

  • Your doctor will have provided you with a list of foods to avoid; if you start craving any of these forbidden items, you might need to fight the urges or substitute your desired food with something similar that is not quite as dangerous.
  • Try to indulge in the low fat/ no fat versions of your desired foods.
  • See a doctor if you begin craving non-food items and do not be afraid to ask as many questions as you need to.

It is your responsibility to look after your child, even if that means denying yourself a few culinary delights during your pregnancy!
