Your Toddler and the Dinner Table: Food They Love

Your child has eaten a variety of purees and you’re convinced that seeing the watery butternut makes her tummy twirl just as much as it does yours. Contrary to what the baby food industry would like us to believe, toddlers can be fed the same kind of food as everyone else in the family.


Food toddlers love

Meatballs: Most toddlers love meatballs. You can make them from scratch and pop them in the freezer to be eaten as snacks later on.

Making meatballs from scratch

Buy minced beef or minced turkey, if desired. You probably only need about a kilogram. If you are strapped for time, you can buy the minced turkey that is already pre-cooked and needs less cooking. Mix the minced beef with sea salt, dried basil and chopped garlic. Set the oven to 200 degrees C. Shape the minced beef mixture into little balls and place on a baking sheet. You will bake these for twenty five minutes. Take out of the oven and sprinkle with spaghetti sauce.

Your toddler will definitely enjoy this, but so will everyone else in your family.

Finger foods: Most toddlers love to eat with their fingers. They prefer to grab things off the plate and that’s why buying finger foods such as:

  • cheese,
  • vegetable sticks,
  • fish and chicken fingers
  • tiny slices of sausage and
  • sliced fruits will be ideal for your toddler.

Make a platter that includes most or all of these finger foods and put it on the table. Your toddler will sit and enjoy picking at each item while watching their favourite television show.

Now that you realize that meals for your toddler don’t have to be complicated or difficult to create. Be creative and see, what other interesting dishes you can put together at mealtimes. You have to be realistic though and give your toddler food that you know she will eat. Toddlers tend to be picky, but there is a lot they are prepared to eat.
